Size of the Work Force

The work force serving the City of New Ulm is 85,900 persons strong. This is an estimate of the workforce within an approximate 30-mile radius of New Ulm. A 30-mile radius around the City of New Ulm includes a majority of the following counties, Blue Earth, Brown, Nicollet, Sibley, Watonwan. According to the Minnesota Department of Economic Security, the size of the labor force and the unemployment rate in June, 2008 for each of these counties is:

New Ulm has a large, available workforce to meet the needs of expanding industry!!!

Labor Costs

According to the Quarterly Census of Employment & Wages, published by the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development, the average weekly manufacturing wage in New Ulm in fourth quarter of 2007 was $892. By comparison, the state wide average weekly manufacturing wage in the fourth quarter of 2007 was $1,035 or 16% higher than the average New Ulm wage! Further, the seven county metro area average weekly manufacturing wages for the same time period was $1,197, which is almost 34% higher than New Ulm wages!!

New Ulm labor is significantly less expensive than the statewide and metro are!!!.

Productivity

Roger Ryberg, President of Windings says "This rural Minnesota area is perfect for companies who seek a diligent, loyal workforce."

Charles Mitchell, President and CEO of Motion Control Group says "The quality of the workforce here is excellent.  They are capable, knowledgeable and responsible."

Eric Hendrickson, Plant Manager for Parker Hannifin's Electromechanical Automation plant in New Ulm says "New Ulm is fortunate to have a technically competent, sable workforce to support high technology manufacturing."

Mark Pollock, then Kraft Plant Manager says the New Ulm Kraft work force “take a tremendous amount of pride in being able to produce a quality product at a low cost.” Kraft announced on September 8, 2002 that Kraft employees recently achieved four million hours worked without a loss-time accident.

Ron Peterson, then Plant Manager for 3M’s 950 employee plant in New Ulm says, “The New Ulm Plant is among the highest 3M plants in attendance with more than half of the employees posting perfect records.” Peterson continues, “We have some people who have been here 25, 30 years with perfect attendance.

Nancy Fogelberg, then President of American Artstone (38 employees) in New Ulm says, “There is a high quality work ethic here that is very difficult to find elsewhere.”

Emil Lonardo, President of Quality Motion Control Technologies (140 employees) says, “The New Ulm workers have a tremendous loyalty to the company. That loyalty is a big advantage that QMC has over its competitors”.

Kurt Bain, then Manufacturing Manager for Kraft Food’s 800 person plant in New Ulm boasts “I have been involved in a number of plants and this is the most competent and dedicated workforce I have ever been involved with. We are proud of our people and their work ethic.
